Program Description:

For over 30 years, the Aspen Global Innovators Group (AGI) has championed leadership innovative solutions to address the world’s most pressing challenges in access to healthcare. AGI builds leadership capacity and connects individuals and organizations with bold ideas and new solutions that tackle long standing health and development challenges.

AGI works with leaders across Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the U.S to reduce health disparities and achieve optimal health for people living in underserved communities. Our programs include fellowship and leadership coaching programs, and strategic partnerships with impactful local organizations around the world.

One of AGI’s core programs is the New Voices Fellowship. For ten years the program has supported development experts and advocates from around the world. The program supports 187 alumni and is launching a regional cohort model in the fall of 2023 along with other initiatives designed to drive impact among the Fellows and alumni.

Basic Function:

The Associate Director will work closely with AGIG staff on the long-term strategic vision of the New Voices program, including the new initiatives. The Associate Director takes the lead in managing administrative and logistical aspects of the New Voices program, including compiling the annual grant reports to donors and conducting financial tracking. The Associate Director will serve as the primary liaison between New Voices’ partners and allies and will lead the design and implementation of the Fellowship curriculum. Creativity is encouraged for this position as the Associate Director will help lay the groundwork for the future of the program. The Associate Director will oversee the organization  and management of the Fellowship’s monitoring and evaluation system as well. The Associate Director will play a crucial role in supporting the success of the Fellows as they are introduced to large audiences around the world. The Associate Director will work closely with the Executive Director, Director - Finance and Operation, and other Aspen staff.

In accordance with our Reimagining Work policy, the Associate Director should be willing to be in-person with colleagues a minimum of 40% of the time while having the flexibility to work remotely for the balance. In-person consists of meaningful connections with colleagues in an office, traveling to a different office or location to meet fellow staff members, at an Aspen event, at a meeting outside the office or other opportunities to meet in person with teammates and colleagues. The expectation is for this role to be in our Washington D.C office a minimum of 2x a week to collaborate with colleagues.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage relationships with New Voices fellows, partners and allies;
  • Monitor and manage project performance and fellows’ progress as well as specific project activities against key milestones, deliverables, and timelines;
  • Together with Executive Director, lead fundraising activities necessary for ensuring the sustainability of the Fellowship, this includes proposal writing, program design, workplan development, and communications;
  • Ensure that efficient systems are in place to support all aspects of project activity, including monitoring and evaluation, and accurate financial reporting;
  • Serve as principal liaison with Aspen Institute web team and/or outside contractors to ensure that the Fellowship’s website, online community, and other online activities are informative, well-designed, up-to-date;
  • Assist in facilitating regular contact with both the fellows and local consultants. Engage with a wide array of people who run media and advocacy platforms with an eye toward assisting those outlets to feature content/talks from the fellows;
  • Oversee support for fellows’ social media activities through Twitter, Facebook and other platforms, including managing operations with a digital content consultant;
  • Oversee the organization of in-person and virtual convenings that feature fellows and alumni of the New Voices and IMPACT West Africa programs;
  • Oversee the planning process of events each year during which the fellows will receive media training and as well as help to identify and coordinate speaking opportunities for fellows at major conferences and meetings.

Knowledge, Education, and Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the media or in communications involving global issues, including global health, economic development, family planning, and reproductive health issues;
  • Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks. Advanced educational degree is a plus, but not a requirement;
  • Excellent management skills, including an ability to juggle multiple projects over several time zones;
  • Ability to work productively both autonomously and with a small team;
  • Deep understanding of global media and communications, with particular familiarity and comfort in West Africa;
  • Hands-on experience managing web sites, social media accounts and/or editing projects;
  • Excellent writing skills;
  • Exceptional communication skills and demonstrated expertise in working well with multiple partners, managing conflicts as they arise, maintaining project team morale and effective team work;
  • Experiencing working with fellowships and/or curriculum development desired, but not required.
