Program Description:

The Center for Native American Youth (CNAY) at the Aspen Institute is a national education and advocacy organization that works alongside Native youth—ages 24 and under—on reservations, in rural villages and urban spaces across the country to improve their health, safety, and overall well- being. All Native youth deserve to lead full and healthy lives, have equal access to opportunity, draw strength from Native culture, and inspire one another. At CNAY, this is achieved through empowerment and culturally competent methodologies that include leadership, youth-led policy agenda, and youth-led narrative.

Basic Function:

CNAY is seeking a talented and experienced Communications Manager to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies that enhance our mission, amplify the Native youth narrative, and engage stakeholders through multiple communications strategies and platforms. The Communications Manager will play a crucial role in crafting and disseminating key messages externally, managing media relations, and ensuring consistent and compelling communication across various channels.

This position reports directly to the Associate Director. The salary range for this position is $88,000- $110,000.

In accordance with our Reimagining Work policy, the Communications Manager should be willing to be in-person with colleagues a minimum of 40% of the time while having the flexibility to work remotely for the balance. In-person consists of meaningful connections with colleagues in an office, traveling to a different office or location to meet fellow staff members, at an Aspen event, at a meeting outside the office or other opportunities to meet in person with teammates and colleagues.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Content Creation
    • Create compelling content for various channels, including press releases media advisories, articles, blog posts, and social media.
    • Ensure consistency of messaging and brand voice across all communication materials.
    • Collaborate with design and multimedia teams to produce visually appealing content.
  • Website and email communications
    • Manage website updates, blog posts, resource exchange, and ensure all information is up to date on; and when applicable.
    • Manage all outgoing CNAY email communications using HTML platforms.
    • Serve as liaison to Aspen Institute communications and web team for any shared Aspen systems.
    • Contribute to recommendations for technology, software, equipment and other tools to improve efficiency of communications systems.
  • Manage print and broadcast media
    • Serve as primary point of contact for all media inquiries.
    • Work with media outlets to ensure sensitivity and accuracy.
    • Support Native youth in connecting with outlets.
    • Actively seek media opportunities for Executive Director and Native youth.
  • Manage social media engagement
    • Manage all social media platforms for CNAY and Generation Indigenous and produce quarterly communications reports and analytics.
    • Draft daily social media content and contribute to digital campaign planning for CNAY.
  • Communications Strategy
    • Support executive team with development of CNAY communications plan, overall communications strategy, and maintenance of CNAY’s communication calendar.
    • Review and deliver weekly communications reports during staff meetings.
    • Conduct other duties as assigned.
  • Staff Management
    • Manage Communications Coordinator, Consultants, and Intern

Knowledge, Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field and 5+ years’ experience in the field.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the Center for Native American Youth and Aspen Institute’s mission and values.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and writing skills.
  • Strong experience with using social media including X, Instagram, and Facebook.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, energy, and initiative.
  • High attention to detail and appreciation of detail-oriented tasks.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with detail and precision moving quickly and efficiently.
  • Familiarity with Mailchimp and design software (e.g., Canva,).
  • Desire or experience working within Indigenous communities.
