Imaginable Futures is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Programs and Partnerships - Kenya to lead the development of a strategy for the execution of IF programs and partnerships in Kenya. In doing so, the role will determine the viability of establishing a sustainable strategy for impact and partnerships that aligns with its global strategy, mission and values. The position is based in Nairobi and will require an individual who can provide strategic leadership and foster cross-sector partnerships. Reporting to the Managing Partner, the Head of Programs and Partnerships will focus on identifying and building strategic relationships with local and international funders, co-funding partnerships with other philanthropies and foundations, and enhancing the capacity of the local team. This role is essential to developing an effective partnership strategy that aligns with IF's work globally, specific to addressing systemic challenges and innovation in the education space. Tasks will involve overseeing the whole of IF’s Kenya strategy and operations including significant people and portfolio management, and engaging with senior leadership
RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership and Organizational Development
- Lead IF activities in Kenya, including building strategy and executing partnerships that align with IF’s global mission and focus areas – ultimately orchestrating progress that transcends geographical boundaries and fosters systemic growth.
- Lead research and engagement efforts to explore Kenya’s funding landscape, identify partners, and develop collaboration opportunities through convening, consulting, research, and innovative grant making.
- Coordinate closely with Managing Partner and Head of Strategy, Learning & Impact, as well as global functions, including consultants, legal experts, and finance teams to execute and integrate initiatives seamlessly following an organizational impact framework and field-catalyzing strategy.
- Craft and deliver comprehensive reports that encapsulate strategic insights, progress metrics, achievements, and challenges, providing clarity to internal stakeholders and the board.
- Develop thought leadership through blogs, keynotes, panels, and other speaking roles in high-profile fora, to build visibility and influence within Kenya's education and social impact sectors. Steadfastly advocate for partnership opportunities and team prioritizes, as well as ethical practices and maintaining the highest standards of organizational integrity.
Partnership and Strategic Alliances
- Identify and cultivate partnerships with philanthropic organizations, foundations, corporates, and other potential co-funders to leverage resources for impactful social initiatives and align with IF principles of equitable practices within philanthropy – specifically, locally-led investment.
- Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including local and international funders, governmental bodies, non-profits, and key educational actors.
- Formulate and articulate comprehensive portfolio theses, executing rigorous due diligence, and presenting strategic recommendations with clarity to the Advisory Committee or geo-team.
- Optimize the impact of partnership activities through astute resource allocation, meticulous budget management, and rigorous progress monitoring, delivering data-driven insights.
- Collaborate with legal and finance teams to structure, negotiate, and finalize complex grant agreements, ensuring robust compliance and favorable terms.
- Serve as the principal liaison for portfolio organizations, providing expert guidance and support to optimize strategic outcomes and enhance performance and promoting the organization’s mission, our grantee partners, and partnership agenda.
Team Development
- Mentor and provide strategic direction to the local team, including developing capabilities in strategy and partnership development and management.
- Facilitate high-impact communication within and across departments, representing the team in senior leadership meetings and delivering insightful updates.
- Develop and institute sophisticated management frameworks and governance structures to elevate team operations and enhance strategic decision-making processes.
- Monitor and evaluate team performance metrics with a discerning eye, identifying areas for improvement and spearheading initiatives for ongoing development.
- Foster a culture of innovation and operational excellence, actively encouraging the proposal and execution of novel ideas and continuous improvement.
- Provide insights and guidance on strategic directions; engaging with senior management, board members, co-investors, and team, evaluate alignment and viability of portfolio including potential expansion or modification of IF’s presence in Kenya.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience: A minimum of 10 years of experience in development strategy, with a track record of building and managing large-scale partnerships. Experience working with global donors, philanthropic organizations, or social enterprises is preferred.
- Sector Knowledge: Understanding of the formal and informal education sector in Kenya and the ability to engage with both grassroots education providers and national policymakers.
- Leadership: Proven leadership experience with the ability to mentor and develop a team, ideally within an international or multicultural context.
- Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic planning and analytical skills, with the vision to identify opportunities, drive innovation, and manage complex stakeholder relationships.
- Philanthropic Enterprise: Skill in varied fundraising methods (grant writing, major gifts, events, sponsorships, peer-to-peer fundraising, and online campaigns), by developing and executing innovative strategies aligned with organizational goals. Builds and maintains strong donor relationships through personalized communication, engagement and stewardship.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to articulate a compelling vision and strategy to diverse audiences and engage stakeholders as a representative at high-profile events.
- Cross-Cultural Competence: Experience working in cross-cultural environments and an understanding of the social, political, and economic context of Kenya and the broader African region.
- Value Alignment: Demonstrated commitment to principles of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) that IF adheres to, and a passion for advancing social change through education. High ethical standards, ideally proven with a track record of managing integrity risks and promoting a culture of transparency and accountability.
