Generation Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure all student parents have the opportunities to succeed and experience economic mobility by engaging education and policy partners to drive systemic change and providing direct support to teen parents in college as well as their children through holistic, two-generation programming. Job Description:
Reporting to the Vice President of Family Programming, the Director of Dallas Programming will be responsible for the programmatic success of Generation Hope’s Scholar Program in Dallas, ensuring seamless team management and development, program delivery, and quality control and evaluation. The Director of Dallas Programming will manage a growing team and is responsible for leadership, oversight and direction of Generation Hope’s newly-established Dallas Scholar Program. The Director plans, develops, and coordinates strategies to ensure the success of young families, represents Generation Hope to federal/state agencies, community partners, and funders; and serves as a member of various outside coalitions representing Generation Hope on topics such as teen parents, the children of teen parents, higher education and marginalized students, and early childhood needs for children with low income. The Director maintains data on all Dallas programming to ensure the organization’s executive leadership and board of directors have up-to-date information to make key organizational decisions.
Major Responsibilities:
- Management:
- Lead and manage a new and growing program team, including a Scholar Program Coordinator and Operations Coordinator, holding team members accountable for stellar performance and upholding Generation Hope's values.
- Create systems for regularly gauging the morale of the team and plan regular activities that keep the team uplifted. Hold weekly coaching/check-in meetings with direct reports, and develop and implement a system to evaluate the skills, experience, and professional development needs of all program staff.
- Work with staff to develop efficient communication and performance goals to ensure positive program participant experience, consistent performance, and goal setting for all employees. Work with the team to identify ways to improve and enhance programming by encouraging and modeling innovation.
- Collaborate with Generation Hope’s home office HR team to hire, develop and train/orient all Dallas program staff and interns.
- Scholar Support/Activities:
- Oversee the execution of Scholar Program activities including social events, trainings, and the annual Pathways to Promise Conference. Work with the programming staff in Generation Hope’s home office on any virtual programming that will include all Scholars across both sites.
- Lead the interview processes for new Scholars and Sponsors as well as the annual Scholar/Sponsor matching process.
- Work with program staff to promptly respond to any Scholar/Sponsor issues, report issues as needed to the Vice President of Family Programming, and create a thorough system for accountability. Attend closure meetings, as needed, for Scholars and Sponsors.
- Manage and oversee the Dallas Scholar Emergency Fund and Degree Acceleration Fund.
- Case Management:
- Manage a small caseload of Generation Hope Scholars (3-5 students), supporting their college pursuits, mentoring relationships, and basic needs.
- Meet with Scholars and their mentors (i.e. Sponsors) to address issues, create action plans for improvement, and locate services for Scholars within the Dallas community and the Scholars’ institutions.
- Cross-department Collaboration:
- Hold regular meetings with the Advancement department to discuss funding opportunities and relationships; ensure that the editorial and social media calendars reflect regional impact and program needs; and update the Dallas Scholar/Sponsor section on the website.
- Work with the Operations department to ensure Dallas operational needs are being met and to improve processes and procedures that impact programming.
- Collaborate with the Learning & Innovation department on technical assistance work with colleges and universities that may involve Dallas Scholars (i.e. teen parents in college in our program) and/or staff as well as the Policy & Research department on any federal/regional legislative policy changes that could impact young families and remove barriers for student parents.
- Participate in organizational retreats and regular Leadership Team meetings to connect with other team members and to assist in setting the strategy for Dallas programming.
- Fiscal Oversight:
- Work with the Operations team to track program spending each month to comply with grant requirements and ensure Dallas program expenses stay within budget.
- Participate in the annual budget process with the executive leadership team to plan for program expenditures in the coming fiscal year.
- Meet with funder prospects and seek out pro-bono and in-kind program donations whenever possible.
- Program Outreach and Recruitment:
- Research and engage the external Dallas community to build and maintain essential relationships with colleges and universities as well as community partners.
- Represent Generation Hope to federal/state agencies, community partners, and funders and serve as a member of various relevant coalitions.
- Work with the Dallas program team to implement a robust college-readiness workshops plan specifically targeting expecting and parenting Dallas high school students or recent graduates at local schools, agencies, and organizations.
- Utilize Generation Hope’s recruitment plans for Scholars and mentors with benchmarks and checkpoints throughout the year to ensure recruitment targets are met.
- Program Evaluation:
- In partnership with the Senior Manager of Research and Evaluation, lead the evaluation and improvement of all Dallas programming. Work with the Vice President of Family Programming to establish and communicate Dallas program metrics and outcomes.
- Using the existing metrics dashboards for the Scholar Program, establish consistent, objective program performance standards of accountability and hold regular meetings with the Dallas program team and executive leadership team to discuss trends and brainstorm areas for improvement.
- Learn and train all new staff on Generation Hope’s evaluation software and support staff in any challenges they may have in using the system. Work with the team to troubleshoot any issues that arise.
- Ensure the program team is entering data related to their Scholars in the program database.
- Work with the Director of DC Programming, Director of NOLA Programming, and the Vice President of Family Programming to compile and analyze data for organization-wide metrics.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
- Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a commitment to Generation Hope’s mission
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in the field of education, youth development, public administration, or a related area
- A minimum of seven years experience in working with marginalized populations with extensive understanding of youth and the Dallas community, with at least five of those years in a leadership role
- A minimum of five years of management experience; exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up programs
- Proven track record of steller program design and execution
- Excellent speaking, writing, and editing skills
- Public speaking and facilitation skills, ability to engage diverse audiences and build excitement about Generation Hope’s mission
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically
- Experience working with funders preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within Generation Hope as well as externally
- Ability to think creatively, initiate and manage projects, and follow through on plans
- Ability to consistently make good decisions through a combination of analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment
- Exceptionally detail-oriented, organized, and deadline-driven
- Desire to continuously learn about Generation Hope’s programs and the broader issues related to Generation Hope’s mission
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite and Google Suite Workspace required
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) strongly preferred
- Experience and/or knowledge about advancing equity within historically marginalized communities
- Personal and professional commitment to understanding and dismantling systemic and institutional racism
TRAVEL
- Ability to travel for activities that may occur at Generation Hope’s home office in Washington, DC as well as other events outside of the DC and Dallas areas such as meetings, trainings, site visits, and convenings (by car, air, or train).
