Senior Director Controller

General Description

Centering Healthcare Institute (“CHI”) is a non-profit organization that collaborates with healthcare providers across all sectors to transform healthcare. Our mission is to improve health, transform care, and disrupt inequitable systems through the Centering group model. We empower patients, strengthen patient-provider relationships, and build communities through three main components: health assessment, interactive learning, and community building.

We are dedicated to creating a future where the risk of preterm birth, the inequities faced by Black women in pregnancy-related outcomes, and the disparities in early childhood are significantly reduced—ensuring that every child has the potential to enjoy better life chances, social and economic opportunities, and overall well-being. With over two decades of experience as the leading resource for group care, we have developed and sustained the Centering model in nearly 500 practice sites and some of the largest health systems in the world.

CHI is seeking to hire a remote Senior Director Controller to join the organization and finance team during a period of evolution and growth. Working closely with the Vice President of Finance and stakeholders across the organization, the Senior Director Controller will manage revenue and grants accounting, oversee finance and accounting policies and internal controls, support new system evaluation and implementation, and lead other accounting operations, cash management, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Revenue & Grants Management & Accounting

  • Operationalize, at an org-wide level, the findings from the revenue assessment (led by a third-party consulting service organization) and lead subsequent systems and process change and improvements

  • Develop a thorough understanding of the entire CRM/sales/revenue cycle from inception through accounting and document as necessary

  • Evaluate & determine correct revenue accounting for grants and contracts

  • Partner with Salesforce Administrator on creating revenue workflows in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

  • Review Salesforce transactions and provide training and support to non-finance staff who enter sales data in Salesforce

  • Manage net asset reconciliation and roll-forward

  • Supervise a Revenue & Grants Accountant (new role to be hired)

Finance & Accounting Policies, Procedures, & Internal Controls

  • Support the Vice President of Finance with auditing existing policies, procedures, and internal controls

  • Recommend/update/develop/document/implement policies, procedures, and internal controls, as needed, with support from the Vice President of Finance and the Senior Director of Finance

  • Develop and maintain a staff-facing finance policy handbook and provide training and support to non-finance staff as needed

Accounting Systems Management & Support

  • Support Vice President of Finance with evaluating and determining new accounting & finance systems and improvements (new general ledger and reporting system and automated AP system)

  • Provide additional capacity for new systems migration, implementation, and training support

  • Serve as administrator or primary contact for assigned systems

Other Accounting Operations, Cash Management, & Compliance

  • Manage accounts receivable and supervise a Coordinator, Accounts Receivable

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing cycles and reporting in coordination with Senior Director of Finance (who oversees accounts payable)

  • Support the Vice President of Finance with managing banking and auditor relationships

  • Manage treasury and cash flow forecasting activities

  • Coordinate annual audit activities with auditors and lead team-wide preparation for audit

  • Support Vice President of Finance with Audit & Finance Committee meetings and reporting

  • Ensure compliance with all state, local, and federal laws regarding finances, tax filings (Form 990), and reporting.

  • Other projects as assigned

Reporting Structure and Key Relationships

This position reports to the Vice President of Finance and supervises an Accountant of Revenue & Grants and a Coordinator of Accounts Receivable.

Qualification and Requirements

Experience:

  • Minimum of 8 years experience in the accounting field required

  • Previous experience as a Controller or other Senior Accounting role at a non-profit organization

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration preferred

  • CPA/MBA highly preferred


Skills:

  • Proven knowledge of GAAP

  • Advanced technical experience in ASC 606 revenue recognition standards, earned-revenue, grants/contract management, & non-profit accounting

  • Proven experience with systems change and implementing/managing automated accounting and finance systems

  • Experience using or retrieving/reconciling data from, Salesforce highly preferred

  • High degree of problem-solving & reconciliation skills; ability to work through ambiguity

  • High degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and organization

  • Highly skilled in follow-through, communication, and project and time management

  • Strong ability to build meaningful relationships with diverse constituencies, including teammates, board members, clients, and partners

Working Conditions:

  • This utilizes standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and audiovisual systems.

  • While adhering to a standard full-time work schedule (8:30 am - 5:00 pm), working irregular hours may be necessary

  • Travel to various locations may be expected for attending conferences, staff meetings and retreats, and any other relevant event

  • This position must also navigate high-pressure situations

  • Continuous professional development and staying informed about accounting, financial practices, and grants management are required to ensure the organization operates within legal frameworks and is consistent with best practices in the field

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for the Senior Director Controller role is $130,000 - $140,000, based on the qualifications and years of relevant experience the selected candidate brings.

Staff who join Centering Healthcare Institute after December 6, 2021, will, as a condition of employment, be required to have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine prior to their start date with the Centering Healthcare Institute and be fully vaccinated (as that term may be defined by the CDC) within 30 days from that date, unless approved for an exemption.
