ABOUT ALU

From the start, we’ve been on a mission to bring the “university of the future” to the world — a place where students declare missions not majors, where real-world experience takes precedence over theoretical classroom lectures, and where learning how to learn has replaced learning facts and figures. Today, ALU is on its way to helping unleash the human potential of a new generation of ethical and entrepreneurial leaders — and in the process, unlock a new era of prosperity and opportunity for Africa and beyond unlike the world has ever seen.

Our mission is not going unnoticed. CNN described ALU — which has campuses in Mauritius and Rwanda — as “The Harvard of Africa;” Fast Company ranked ALU one of the 50 most innovative organisations in the world and the most innovative endeavour in Africa; and The New York Times recognised ALU as one of the eight places in the world “where history is being made.”

ABOUT ALU FACULTY

ALU faculty empower students to learn through designing, iterating, and delivering our learning model. This requires a sharp break from conventional instructional norms.

In particular, ALU faculty:

  • Understand and can apply ALU’s learning principles to learning design and facilitation. Faculty in this model are guides/coaches/mentors, not experts, facilitators, or lecturers.
  • Role model lifelong learning, leadership, and institutional values (e.g. growth mindset)
  • Support student development in low touch, high impact ways (we don’t have the luxury to handhold students nor do we believe this is the most effective approach to learning). Our faculty are committed to designing constructionist, scalable learning environments.
  • Approach interactions with students with a focus on what a student is doing, rather than what the faculty member is doing
  • Help students develop skills more than they teach content
  • Enable students towards becoming self-directed, providing scaffolds where needed

OUR DEGREE PROGRAMMES

Our degree programmes in Mauritius are accredited and awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland, UK.

1. BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

Our Business Management programme aims to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue a range of careers across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors in Africa. Students develop an understanding of the practice of ethical management across a variety of organisational and national contexts by exploring case studies from across the continent and apply business and financial analytical skills in practical simulations.

2. SOCIAL SCIENCES

The BA Social Science honours degree at ALU is delivered with a deliberate vision to produce social scientists with innovative skills to solve critical social problems confronting Africa and the world today. Behavioural insights from social scientists are important for transformational leadership in all aspects of society: politics, business, environment, media, civil society, and households. To change society, we first must understand how it works.

3. COMPUTING

ALU’s Computer Science (CS) programme provides a pathway for students to develop sound computational reasoning and technical skills to envision and build robust solutions to local and global challenges across a variety of disciplines and industries. This programme is in line with ALU’s aims to develop skills in their students that will have them remain relevant in the present and in the future. Empowering students to develop higher-order critical thinking skills and engaging with the real-world throughout their education enables them to take on some of Africa’s challenges and find relevant and sustainable solutions.
