ALA Global Scholars Program (GSP) 2023

African Leadership Academy (ALA) seeks experienced education, summer program and youth development professionals with demonstrated passion for experiential education coupled with strong organizational and group/classroom management skills for an exciting, multi-faceted summer position. GSP brings together students from across Africa and the rest of the world for 10-day, + -18-day and custom programs that integrate ALA’s signature entrepreneurial leadership and design-thinking approaches with cross cultural engagement, adventure, and South African history.

GSP is a full-time residential program that requires all educators to reside on ALA campus in student dormitories for the full program session and for its pre-program 5-day Educator Orientation & Training. Educators will also be expected to fulfil the roles of chaperone, mentor, and advisor to students throughout the program session. Educators have evening/night dorm duties most nights. Time off is scheduled throughout the session.

GSP Educators

Essential Responsibilities

  • Work effectively and professionally with a team of educators, including ALA alumni, to deliver an excellent Global Scholars Program (GSP).
  • Facilitate curriculum, including readings, lessons, class activities and experiential learning activities, including lesson/activity preparation before
  • Lead and support an advisory family of 5-8 students
  • Facilitate different types of camp activities (Community Engagement Project (CEP) with South African entrepreneur and NGO partners, Electives, Game Design etc.)
  • Chaperone off-campus excursions
  • Risk management of student group on and off-campus
  • Communicate regularly with the Session Director about student experiences and report all concerns
  • Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance
  • Coordinate student-led groups leading recreational, co-curricular and sporting activities (e.g. assemblies, storytelling, talent night, movie night, opening and closing ceremonies
  • Report issues, resource shortages, student needs, educator tool and support needs to director/s
  • Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines and emergency procedures both on and off-campus
  • Understand and follow all policies and procedures outlined in the GSP Educator Handbook

Qualifications

  • Experience in educational programming for teens, preferred (e.g., teaching, summer program, after-school programs, outdoor/adventure programs)
  • Strong organizational and group/classroom management skills
  • First-Aid trained or certified, imperative. (Basic training acceptable)
  • Three years of full-time work experience, (advantageous)
  • Previous experience as a GSP educator, (advantageous)
  • BUILD certification but not neccessary (advantageous)
  • Previous experience with ALA's unique Entrepreneurial Leadership curriculum, (advantageous)

  • Works well within a team environment
  • Able to manage own time and make most of time available for lesson and activity planning
  • Works well under pressure
  • Self-aware and knows own limitations
  • Engages others and able to ask questions and seek the help and advice from others
  • Excited about learning and shows willingness to try new things that might not be personal strengths
  • High energy, enthusiasm and a great sense of humour
  • Experience delivering entrepreneurship or student leadership curricula a plus

Physical Demands

GSP is physically demanding. The hours are long and the season takes place at a fast pace. Educators must have the ability to lead and participate in program activities which may include, but are not limited to, hiking/walking, service activities, team-building initiatives, and physical games and sports.
